Improve the appearance and value of your home
One of the best ways to improve the appearance and increase the value of your home in Connecticut is by replacing the windows.
If you have an older home with wood or metal framed windows, you are probably losing a lot of energy through air leaks around the frame itself and through the glass. You can replace the windows with new wood sashes, but you may want to look at insulated aluminum or at the today’s most popular vinyl replacement window or vinyl framed replacement window. The most popular brands of replacement windows are Anderson , Marvin, Simonton an Pela, but there are hundreds of window manufacturers across the country that are well worth taking a closer look at if you’re considering replacement. These are easy to install, according to most reviews, can be ordered in almost any color, and are maintenance free once they have been installed
Energy efficient replacement windows are an effective way to cut down on your monthly utility bills and give your home a fresh new look. Replacement windows come in a wide variety of materials and styles to meet your specific needs. You can choose from vinyl replacement windows, storm windows, custom wood windows, bay windows and bow windows. An investment in replacement windows could cut down on your energy costs and give you and your family significant savings every month.
Replacement windows have been developed as a labor and cost-cutting alternative. Unlike full-frame windows, which are designed for new construction houses, replacement windows are made to fit into existing window openings. Today windows available in dozens of standard sizes, from as narrow as 11 ½ inches to as wide as 72 inches, and come in vinyl, composite, wood, fiberglass, vinyl-clad wood, and aluminum-clad wood.
There are two main types of replacement windows:
- "Block frame" (or insert) replacement windows, are found in markets where wood windows are in place, and the exterior is brick or siding. In most parts of the country, the block frame window is simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed
- "Flush fin" (or called Z-bar) replacement windows are typically used in California and other markets with aluminum windows in stucco home exteriors. This method leaves the original aluminum window frame intact and provides very little opportunity for the stucco siding to be damaged.
Replacement windows are designed for a variety of installation situations and techniques.
Insert installations are sometimes used when replacing older wood windows with frames that are in good condition. In this case, the new replacement window is installed within the existing frame. This installation technique is simpler than a full-frame installation, but decreases the size of the window opening due to the nesting of the frames.
In a full-frame installation, trim around the old window (interior and/or exterior) is removed and the old window frame is removed completely. The new replacement window is secured to the studs surrounding the window opening, and the trim is replaced.
New construction windows typically have a nail fin around the frame. When homes are built, the framing is likely constructed of wood studs. The nail fin rests against the outside of the stud, and screws or nails are driven through the holes in the fin of the windows. All other exterior materials are then applied and butted up to the frame of the window or trim.
